General information

Service offered: Sight Action is a community service that aims to provide information, teach new skills and provide access to specialist support and equipment. Sight Action is contracted by the NHS Highland, NHS Western Isles and the Highland and Western Isles Councils to provide patient support and rehabilitation to blind and visually impaired adults and children. We can help visually impaired people cope safely and confidently around the home with improved independent living skills. We have a range of equipment available in our resource centres for you to use or to purchase. We can also provide a wide range of advice and we can provide emotional support. Sight Action complements the clinical care provided by our health service colleagues. We help patients attending the eye clinic to fully understand their visual impairment and, if necessary, can liaise with the medical team to clarify areas of concern. Anyone with a visual impairment can access our services or a family member or health professional can refer you. Rehabilitation Services. Sight Action offer rehabilitation and a variety of training programmes to help make everyday living with low vision manageable. We can arrange to visit you at home to help our staff gain greater understanding of your situation. They can then identify ways to help you overcome the difficulties imposed by poor vision. We can then implement training programmes to help you adapt existing and / or adopt new skills. Training could include: Orientation and mobility. Independent living. Communication skills. Low vision enhancement. We can also help those around you understanding your visual impairment and how it impacts your life. Volunteering with Sight Action can make a difference to offering positive choices in maintaining chosen lifestyles within the limits imposed by deteriorating vision. Our volunteers play a crucial role in the organisation running services such as the talking books library and assisting clients on walking groups.
