General information
Service offered: We offer free initial legal advice on certain areas of law to people who are not eligible for legal aid. Priority is given to those who would not otherwise be able to access legal services (for example, due to income or location). Our service is delivered predominantly using Zoom or telephone although we also offer appointments face to face to those who would struggle to access the service otherwise. We will ask you to state your preference when you contact us. We cannot advise where you are already receiving advice from another provider, or where your case is urgent or overly complex. We are a member of LawWorks, which is a charity based in England and Wales who are committed to enabling access to justice through free legal advice. Prior to your legal advice session our trained student advisers will take details of your case to enable us to decide whether we are able to help you. Please note that you will not receive advice at this point. This information is then shared with the volunteer lawyer and Director of the Centre who is an experienced solicitor, who decides whether you can be offered an appointment. A group of students will be present during your appointment who work under the supervision of our qualified lawyers. This ensures that we are able to provide a written confirmation of the advice you received. We are unable to consider large quantities of documents or provide ongoing casework support. We also provide links to appropriate referral agencies, so that you can take the steps necessary to resolve your case. Area(s) of law covered: General Civil Litigation, Small claims, Personal Independence Payment Form Filling Service, Consumer, Employment, Family, School Exclusions, Social Housing Disrepair, Personal injury, General contractual disputes, initial Immigration advice, and legal advice to small businesses.
