General information
Service offered: Advocate tries to find free legal help from barristers for people who cannot get public funding (legal aid) and cannot afford to pay. Applications can be made directly through the online form on the website or preferably through a referring agency (eg Citizen's advice, law centre, legal clinic) who can help complete the details needed. Applications can be made if any deadline is at least three weeks away (any closer and there is not enough time to process it). Successful applicants may be advised on a single piece of work (not a whole case) by barristers in writing or in conference, represented at court, in tribunals or assisted with mediation.
Target group: General public needing legal help where legal aid or any other funding is not available and private help is not affordable. Small organisations may also apply.
Area served: England and Wales.
How to contact: Phone (0207 092 3960 – voicemail only), email or letter. Application forms and further information available via the website. Open Monday to Friday – 10am – 5pm (visits by appointment only)
